reviews - Music Notes Empire board game - with many music theory games, must for Music Education

"An impressively-produced, Monopoly-style board game, this uses note values as 'money', and pitched treble and bass notes like 'hotels', which players must name correctly either to buy them or to land on them without paying a fine. 'Composer questions' (Which composer also became Prime Minister? a) Shostakovich b) Paderewski c) Pachelbel) add bonus points to your final score....
...there are some lovely touches (landing on a repeat sign means go back to the beginning, on a crotchet rest means miss a go), it has been beautifully produced, with pewter mini-instruments as counters, a heavy glossy board, and multi-coloured note boxes, and the game certainly achieves its aim in making it fun to learn to read staff notation. In the presence of a music-reading adult this would be an enjoyable family game...
...Such a marvelous idea, with a few modifications, would be an invaluable resource for theory classes." Annie Willie "Piano Professional" EPTA UK January 2005.

"An alternative and unusual music resource, Music Notes Empire, aims to provide a different way of learning the basic foundation of musical language in the form of a family board game. The focus is on reinforcement and repetition of pitch, duration and other basic stave characteristics....
...it is apparent that a lot of thought and detail has gone into the aesthetic quality of the game and that once understood, it achieves what it sets out to do. Pitch and duration are addressed and reinforced, which only serves to heighten a beginner's knowledge of the basics...." - Emily Barkway, Music Teacher magazine UK 2004

The Vasmers
Instead of struggling with musical notation, Music Notes Empire makes learning fun, and not just for the individual child, the whole family can get involved! Let's hear what individual members of the family had to say:

"I love listening to classical music but know very little about musical notation - so the game is a great help. The children are quicker at musical notation but my pride is restored when I can answer the questions about composers!" (Dad)

"As a complete novice, I was beginning to get the hang of the notes and values by the end of the game." (Grandad)

"We had a lot of fun after the game trying to play tunes with the notes we had collected - my eldest grandson wrote a very pleasant tune and played it at the piano. Perhaps the game could give more encouragement to musical composition." (Granny)

"I thought the game was very interesting and made it easier to understand musical notation - it is a long time since I was learning the piano! Nice to find a game which is educational as well as fun." (Grandma)

"I think this is a good way to help people learn the notes." (Theo aged 8)

"I think it is very good. I wish I’d had this game when I was six, and starting the piano." (Michael aged 11)
